Deputies are warning residents to lock their cars after a spate of vehicles burglaries in southwest Orange County.
There were about 25 car burglaries in the Bay Hill area in January. Countywide, there were 232 auto burglaries in January, up from 198 during January 2013, sheriff's spokeswoman Jane Watrel said.
The Sheriff's Office has put two electronic signs on Apopka-Vineland Road reminding people to lock their doors and keep their valuables out of sight. Some of the burglaries were to unlocked cars, but in others the thieves smashed windows, Watrel said.
The Sheriff's Office also sent fliers and made reverse-911 calls to two particularly hard-hit neighborhoods, the Bay Ridge condo community and Pembrooke near MetroWest.
Last week, police in the Seminole County city of Oviedo also warned residents to lock their cars after a large number of auto burglaries in January.
