2 Polk deputies shot; suspect dead

Neighbor describes shooting
LAKELAND - Two Polk County sheriff's deputies were shot when they confronted a man in Lakeland early this morning, the sheriff's office says. A suspect is dead.

The man opened fire on the deputies about 2:30 a.m. near Plateau Avenue and Josephine Street, according to Donna Wood, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office. That's down the street from Keen Elementary School.

"I was on my cell phone on my front porch and heard the gunshots going off: pow, pow, pow, pow. Then a brief silence; then I heard another three or four gunshots," said Dayton Carver, who lives nearby.

Reports from the scene say the deputies were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Their injuries are not life-threatening, the sheriff's office said. The deputies' names and conditions have not been released.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd met with his detectives and was on the scene.
